Patient with episodic events of burning and irritation of the tongue, particularly with hot or spicy foods.
Primarily lesions of erosion confined to the tongue - but also elsewhere in the mouth.
What is the diagnosis and the treatment strategy?

Diagnosis:
Geographic tongue – often associated to psoriasis, diabetes, anaemia, atopy and stress.
Particularly foods seem to be a trigger for some patients. Clustering within a family suggests genetic involvement.
Frequency:
Occurs in up to 2 % of the population - more commonly in females than males.
Most people do not require treatment since geographic tongue is a benign condition that usually resolves itself.
Treatment:
Treatment of associated medical problems may improve the condition. Symptomatic treatment with antiseptic, anaesthetic agents and topical corticosteroids may be helpful.
